Land Between Two Rivers
The area where the Poonjar River (Thekkanar) and Teekoy River (Vadakkanar) merge to form the Meenachil River was traditionally associated with the name Eerattida, meaning the land between two rivers.
Growth as a Trading Centre
Erattupetta developed from a small settlement into an important commercial centre. The term "Petta" is associated with a trading place, open market, suburban market or camp.
Traditional Trade Route
Erattupetta served as a resting place for bullock carts carrying goods from Tamil Nadu. It also played an important role in the movement and exchange of agricultural and hill products.
River-Based Trade
Before the construction of bridges, the Meenachil River played a major role in transportation and trade. Boats, rafts and cargo boats connected different parts of the region.
Erattupetta is believed to have had human settlement from a very early period. Traditional family names and local historical references indicate the long history of settlement in the region.
The region was associated with the historical Poonjar kingdom and developed as an important centre of trade and transportation.
On 13 January 2015, the State Cabinet decided to upgrade Erattupetta Panchayat into a Municipality without changing its existing boundaries.
Following the 2016 Local Self Government elections, the Municipal Council of Erattupetta officially came into existence.
River Sandbanks
The seasonal sandbanks of the Meenachil River once served as important locations for fairs, festivals and public gatherings.
Trade & Commerce
River transport and traditional markets contributed significantly to the commercial development of Erattupetta.
Cultural Heritage
Erattupetta has a diverse cultural heritage and is home to important religious and historical landmarks, including St. George Forane Church.
